About the role

At Central Bedfordshire Council, we are committed to ensuring that children, young people, and families receive the highest quality of care and support. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact by supporting the next generation of social workers through their professional journey.

We are looking for a qualified and experienced social worker to take on the role of Student Lead Practitioner, working within our Children & Families teams. You’ll play a key role in developing early-career practitioners, supporting social work students, apprentices, and newly qualified social workers (NQSWs) as they grow into confident and capable professionals.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about developing others, thrives in a team environment, and is committed to maintaining high standards in social work practice.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead and coordinate the ASYE programme in line with national guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) and Skills for Care.
  • Support the learning and development of NQSWs, social work apprentices, and students through mentoring, coaching, and quality assessments.
  • Manage student placements, ensuring a high-quality and supportive practice learning environment.
  • Work in partnership with the Principal Social Worker, Children & Families and Adult Services managers, and Learning & Development teams to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Promote a culture of reflective practice, continuous improvement, and professional development across the service.

You will need to:

  • Be a qualified social worker, registered with Social Work England.
  • Have experience in practice education—including assessing students or supporting apprentices and NQSWs.
  • Be an excellent communicator and organiser, with the ability to lead projects and support learners effectively.
  • Demonstrate strong partnership working skills, working across departments and with external partners to promote positive learning outcomes.
  • Have a commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and delivering high-quality public services.

Our teams believe in growing great social workers. By joining us as a Student Lead Practitioner you’ll join a team that values collaboration, innovation, and professional development. We offer:

  • Supportive leadership and team environment
  • Access to ongoing professional development and training
  • Options to support your wellbeing – family friendly policies and hybrid working
  • Opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of children and families

If you’re passionate about supporting early-career social workers and helping shape the future of social care, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today and join a team that’s making a difference, every day.
