Team: LAL – Various Libraries across Central Bedfordshire

Salary: £24,796 - £25,185 per annum pro rata (£12.86 – £13.06 per hour)
Hours: 0 hours per week, casual contract, as required by the service
Location: Biggleswade, Sandy, Stotfold or Potton Libraries (must be able to work at least one of these sites; travel to other libraries may be required)

About the role
Central Bedfordshire Libraries are more than just places to borrow books, they are community hubs that provide welcoming spaces, tackle loneliness, support digital access, offer activities for all ages and are a welcoming and safe place for all.
We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible Casual Customer Service Assistants to join us on a casual basis. This role is ideal if you enjoy variety and want to make a positive difference to local communities, while playing a vital role in our library service. You’ll be covering planned absences, sickness and busy events, sometimes at short notice.
As a casual Customer Services Assistant, you may be asked to work at any of our libraries including Ampthill, Biggleswade, Flitwick, Potton, Sandy, Shefford and Stotfold depending on your availability.
We are currently only looking for applicants who are able to work at Biggleswade, Sandy, Stotfold or Potton Libraries for this role, but ability to travel to the remaining libraries would be a bonus.
Day-to-day tasks include:
- Assisting customers with self-service kiosks, library apps, and public computers.
- Finding and recommending books and/or information for customers.
- Helping deliver and lead library activities for children and adults.
- Supporting library stock work, including shelving, tidying and moving books or furniture.
What we’re looking for
Experience working in a library before isn’t essential but is desirable. You must be able to:
- Provide excellent customer service and work confidently with the public.
- Use IT systems and support others in using library technology.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with people of all ages.
- Work flexibly across multiple libraries, including Saturdays (a driving licence and car are desirable).
- Handle the physical aspects of the role, including moving stock and equipment.
