About the role:

Here in the Corporate Health and Safety Team, we give guidance on occupational health and safety to managers and staff across the council and in maintained schools. By keeping our workforce safe and well, we’re making sure they can give our residents 100%. As a Corporate Health and Safety Advisor, you’ll be at the heart of our work, helping our managers and head teachers to minimise risks to their teams. With the chance to make a difference to our employees – and therefore the 300,000-strong community they serve – you can find your greatness and do something amazing for our region.

As part of a small, supportive and friendly team, you’ll provide proportionate and expert advice on all aspects of health and safety in our services, which span a multitude of business sectors. You’ll have extensive experience of:

  • Providing health and safety support to manage the risks faced in a wide range of services and business functions;
  • Providing expert, proportionate and tailored health and safety advice to managers, staff and services requiring assistance;
  • Monitoring accident/incident reports and carrying out both routine and more complex incident investigations;
  • Creating, reviewing and updating health and safety guidance, policies and tools to help managers and staff deliver safe and healthy services;
  • Creating and delivering health and safety training sessions, briefings and workshops;
  • Creating and reviewing health and safety risk assessments and safe systems of work;
  • Carrying out health and safety audits and inspections, providing proportionate and prioritised recommendations for actions required;
  • Co-ordinating, managing and leading case work, projects, programmes and risk management schemes;
  • Dealing with people at all levels and across multiple sectors.

To join us, you’ll also need:

  • A minimum of a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent level 3 health and safety qualification); and
  • A full, valid driving licence and access to your own vehicle, as the role will involve conducting visits across the county, sometimes at short notice.

As a researcher, listener, author and explainer, you’ll know how to communicate health and safety in a non-technical, comprehensible and compelling way. A fantastic people person with a friendly and consultative approach, you’ll influence schools and council staff to act on your guidance. If this sounds like you, and you’re IT literate and highly organised, you’ll be able to play a big part in keeping our people safe and well. Be it schools or social care, waste or transport, elections or leisure and countryside, you’ll enjoy a varied role where no two days are the same and the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills is ongoing.
