About the role:
The Community Safety Enforcement Team are looking to appoint 2 Environmental Protection Officers (EPO) who will work with our partners, both internal and external, to tackle environmental crime and reduce fly-tipping across Central Bedfordshire.
We are looking for someone with an investigative background, to join our passionate and dedicated team of investigators. You will investigate offences of environmental crime such as fly-tipping, littering, statutory noise nuisance and contraventions of dog control orders.
The role as an Environmental Protection Officer will be to gather evidence through both Covert and Overt means, interview suspects and witnesses, analyse diary sheets and conduct formal interviews with suspects under PACE.
You will maintain case records using our case management system and, in some cases, where you have enough evidence, prepare evidential files for court proceedings or issue Fixed Penalty Notices or other Community Orders. Whilst enforcement is a large part of this role there are many opportunities to offer advice and education, with prevention also being a large part of our role.
Good literacy and numeracy skills are essential to this role. You will be required to communicate with a wide variety of people including suspects, witnesses and partners in order to perform your role. An investigative background is essential, and a good knowledge of environmental legislation would be desirable but is not essential as specialist training will be provided as part of your induction. You will be expected to travel across Central Bedfordshire to investigate offences and attend meetings as required, with the use of a CBC fleet vehicle therfore a full UK driving licence is essential to the role.
Education and prevention is vital to this role and a sense of empathy is needed when talking to victims of crime.
This is a wide, varied and rewarding role; whilst demonstrating caring skills you will also need the skills to remain objective in certain situations.
