Highways Technician

Team: HIG - Traffic Management Highways

Job Family: Enabling - CBG8

Salary: £31,022 - £33,851 per annum pro rata

Hours: 37 hours per week (2 positions available) 

Location: You will be expected to attend Thorn Turn Depot, Houghton Regis and any CBC office location as often as needed to carry out your role, which will be no less than once per month.

Contract Type:  Hybrid – Permanent

About the role:

We’re excited to offer the opportunity to join our Highways Team as a Technician and play a part in ensuring our roads are safe, accessible, and well-maintained.

 

As part of our team, you will:

  • Help shape and deliver a range of small schemes to improve the operation and safety of the local highway network.
  • Commission and analyse data to help inform decision-making.
  • Field queries and respond to requests for advice and guidance.
  • Instruct small works from our highways contractor and track and report progress.
  • Undertake site visits and investigations.
  • Make a positive contribution to the work of the wider team who are responsible for ensuring road space is efficiently and effectively managed for the benefit of all users.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking candidates who bring:

  • An interest in practical problem-solving using engineering
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong technical skills, with the ability to draft short reports
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload
  • Good communication skills in responding to emails from, colleagues, residents and occasionally, local councillors
  • Ability to travel independently to undertake site visit and surveys
  • An understanding of how the public highway is managed, including relevant legislation and regulations

 

Ideally, you’ll hold (or be willing to work towards) an HNC or equivalent qualification in civil engineering or a related discipline. We welcome candidates with relevant experience and training, and we can offer internal and external development opportunities for the right person.

 

Additional Requirements of the Highways Technician

  • Proficient in IT with hands-on experience using various Microsoft Office applications
  • An interest in how the road and footpath networks are structured and how this affects people traveling on foot, by bike or in a car or goods vehicle
  • Familiarity with working in an environment where there are regulations designed to ensure people are protected from risks
  • Experience of delivering small projects  
  • Awareness of how council’s operate
