Salary: £38,476 - £40,069 per annum pro rata
Hours: 37 hours per week. (While core hours are Monday to Friday, up to 2 evenings a week and occasional weekend working will be required to support programme delivery).
Location: You will be expected to attend a CBC office location as often as needed to carry out your role, which will be no less than once per month.

About the role
Central Bedfordshire Council has an exciting opportunity an experienced and enthusiastic manager to work as part of the Choose You service, on behalf of the Shared Public Health Service across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes
The Public Health Officer – Supervisor will provide strong day‑to‑day leadership to a team delivering our weight‑management programmes, ensuring residents receive high‑quality, consistent support to improve their health and wellbeing.
Working under the Public Health Principal for Service Delivery, you will manage Public Health Officers delivering weight‑management interventions, while also delivering programmes yourself across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.
You will provide clear leadership, oversee operational delivery, and maintain high standards of practice, ensuring interventions are delivered in line with motivational interviewing principles and established programme models. This role is ideal for a confident, skilled practitioner who is passionate about public health, experienced in managing staff, and committed to delivering effective behavioural‑change programmes that reduce health inequalities.
Responsibilities will include:
- Improve health and wellbeing outcomes for residents engaging with the service.
- Provide strong, effective leadership to ensure delivery of high‑quality services.
- Make daily decisions on prioritisation, resource allocation, and workload management.
- Provide consistent line management, supervision and support to Public Health Officers – Healthy Weight.
- Lead supervision, professional development, training, and performance or disciplinary processes.
- Set, monitor and review objectives for team members to ensure high performance.
- Lead recruitment activities for direct reports.
- Ensure Choose You interventions are delivered in line with motivational interviewing principles, maintaining quality and fidelity of delivery.
- Deliver face‑to‑face and virtual weight management groups for residents across Bedford, Milton Keynes and Central Bedfordshire.
- Follow established policies and programmes to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with wider stakeholders to support service development and delivery.
- Oversee day‑to‑day operational delivery, including managing waiting lists and driving continuous improvement of programme quality and performance.
- Co‑ordinate programme scheduling and manage staff caseload quotas to support efficient service delivery and meet demand.
- Accurately record attendance, metrics and outcomes within the case management system, and provide clear reporting to inform service development.
- Work collaboratively with Behaviour Change Practitioners, Health & Wellbeing Coaches, Client Services and other internal partners to ensure consistent, integrated service delivery.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Demonstrable experience of successfully managing and motivating teams to achieve outcomes.
- Degree-level education and/or relevant professional qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Experience leading customer‑focused services and working with a range of stakeholders, including service users, to deliver and develop effective one-to-one and group programmes.
- Understanding of health inequalities and experience working with diverse populations, including ethnic minorities and individuals from deprived areas.
- Proven ability to deliver effective one‑to‑one and group behaviour‑change interventions, using evidence‑based approaches.
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle as travel across Bedford, Milton Keynes and Central Bedfordshire is essential for this role.

- Background in nutrition, either through qualification or practical experience
