About the Role:

We’re looking for a talented Internal Communications Officer (Career Grade) to join us on a maternity cover basis in our ambitious Communications and Consultation team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a communicator who is either developing, or has some experience, to make a meaningful impact - supporting colleagues across the organisation and helping ensure staff are informed, engaged and inspired.

You will have proven experience managing your own varied and busy workload, meeting tight deadlines, and communicating effectively with customers at all levels of the organisation. You’ll play an important role in planning, creating and delivering high‑quality communications across our established internal channels, including supporting organisational change programmes.

This is a busy, fast-paced role requiring a strong work ethic, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work well under pressure. You will demonstrate sound editorial judgement, excellent writing skills and a keen eye for detail to help ensure our messages are clear, consistent and aligned with our organisational values.

As this role is a career grade development programme, you do not need to be an expert in all communications and organisational change activities to be appointed but you will need to have the ability and motivation to learn and develop.

You must have previous experience of working within an internal communications function.

Career grade

Supporting you to develop and progress through a career grade development programme

As part of our commitment to developing you, we are excited to offer this role as a career-graded development opportunity.  We will support you to work through a career grade programme as you progress and enhance your skills and knowledge in Communications.

The career grade goes from Grade 9 (£34,811 - £37,562) – Grade 10 (£38,476 - £40,069) - Grade 11 (£41,042 - £44,296)

We will:

·         Buddy you with Internal Communications colleagues to help you to maximise your experience and help better your understanding of how it all works

·         Hold regular 1:1s and career grade development/planning sessions to help you demonstrate your competencies to progress through each career grade

At the higher grade, you would be expected to work more independently, dealing with more sensitive subjects and running organisational change communications programmes from end to end.

What We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from candidates with a range of experience.

At the lower end of the grade, we’d be expecting…

  • Strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and creatively.
  • Experience of (or interest in) managing internal communication channels, including digital platforms such as a SharePoint intranet.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and developing engaging content for a variety of audiences.
  • An understanding of analytical approaches to measure communication effectiveness and improve engagement.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships and collaborate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Creating engaging content—such as news stories, features, leadership messages and staff updates—that brings our values to life.
  • Providing advice and support to colleagues to help them communicate effectively.

At the higher end of the grade, we’d be expecting:

  • Scoping and delivering staff engagement events, including director or senior manager events.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing internal communication channels, including digital platforms such as a SharePoint intranet.
  • Leading the planning, development and delivery of communications for organisational change and key projects.
  • Supporting or leading the management and development of internal communication channels, including the SharePoint intranet, e‑newsletters and engagement activities.
  • Monitoring and evaluating communication performance to develop insight and recommendations over time.
  • Leading complex campaigns, shaping strategic messaging, and acting as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders.
