Hours: 37 hours per week

Location: Oakfield Gardens Crematorium, Fordfield Road, Steppingley, Bedford.

Contract Type: Fixed - Permanent

About the role 

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Crematorium Support Officer & Technician with our new team at the first crematorium in Central Bedfordshire. The Council has recently opened a brand new, modern facility for bereaved families to say goodbye to loved ones within the area.

 

Offering a unique opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to join the new crematorium team and to make a real difference to the experiences of families in the area. As a Crematorium Support Officer & Technician you will support the team to ensure that the crematorium provides the highest levels of customer care and supports bereaved families in a dignified and respectful fashion.

 

The successful candidate will already hold or will be committed to attaining either the Cremator Technicians Training Scheme Certificate (CTTS). In addition you will ideally have experience of working in a crematorium environment as well as understanding the requirements for confidentiality and discretion and the needs of the bereaved and have a good knowledge of legislation concerned with crematoriums. 

 

 Our ideal Candidate will:

  • Have experience of operating cremators and ancillary equipment and understand COSHH regulations for handling hazardous substances; health and safety regulations; and using correct manual handling techniques and appropriate equipment for lifting and moving.  
  • Prepare the cremated remains for collection by the relevant parties.  
  • Ensure all cremation documentation is thoroughly checked and accurate records are maintained in accordance with agreed protocols
  • Carry out maintenance of the cremator and ancillary equipment to a high operational standard ensuring compliance with all environmental, health & safety and best practice requirements for the equipment.  
  • Assist in the running of chapel operations, operating the media system, greeting mourners, cleaning and preparing the chapel and assisting Funeral Directors with the smooth running of the service as may be necessary. 
  • Support the release of cremated remains of the deceased in accordance with procedures and attend the scattering of remains and record the location of their final disposal, ensuring the correct documentation is completed.
  • Ensure memorial areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and presentation and are prepared in advance for the placing of cremated remains. 
  • Support the provision of a comprehensive range of clerical duties as required.
  • Be committed to being a Member of an appropriate Professional Body e.g. Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM)
  • Be confident and calm. Show empathy and compassion in emotional situations.
