Location: You will be expected to attend a CBC office location as often as needed to carry out your role, which will be no less than once per month.

Are you looking for a hands-on apprenticeship where you can learn, earn, and make a real difference to your local area? Central Bedfordshire Council is offering an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice to join our Highways Team and begin a rewarding career in civil engineering.
We believe apprentices bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and innovation. To help you build a strong foundation, we rotate apprentices every six months across different highway disciplines, giving you wide-ranging experience in areas such as:

Road and footway maintenance

Drainage and structures

Road resurfacing and reactive maintenance

Traffic and transport improvement schemes

Development control
You won’t just be observing – you’ll be actively involved. From visiting sites to contributing to projects from start to finish, you’ll have the chance to apply what you learn, develop your technical skills, and see your work make a visible impact.
The apprenticeship pathway you will be completing will be working towards a Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 qualification. This is a 3 year course set to begin in April 2026 in partnership with Cambridge Regional College. Throughout term time, you will attend Cambridge Regional College in person once per week to support your studies. Additionally your role and work within our Highways Team will align with and support your coursework.
About You:
You must be keen and enthusiastic, literate and numerate. Engineers need to be able to communicate technical projects to other professionals and non-technical audiences.
To be eligible for this role, you must be an employee of Central Bedfordshire Council by the start of the college course in the week commencing 13 April 2026. All pre-employment checks must be successfully completed prior to this date. You must also be able to travel to and from the college independently.
This position will be based at our Highways Depot at Thorn Turn, Houghton Regis, although there will be opportunity for flexible working from home and from other council offices.
