Public Health Practitioner for Children & Young People

Team: Public Health  

Job Family: Advising - CBG11 
Salary:  £39,769 - £42,922 per annum  
Hours:  Full time, 37 hours per week 

Base Location: You will be expected to attend a CBC office location as often as needed to carry out your role, which will be no less than once per month.

Contract Type: Hybrid - Permanent

More about the role:

This is a high-profile role working with a range of key internal and external partners to support the development, delivery, and co-ordination of strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of all children, with a key focus on improving the health of those whose health is poorest.  

 

This role will provide essential, and dedicated commissioning support to the Public Health Principal for Children & Young People (C&YP) in Central Bedfordshire – specifically in the commissioning, and contract management of The 0-19 Healthy Child Programme (HCP) Service across 3 local authorities – Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire, and Milton Keynes Councils - using a range of public health knowledge, skills, and approaches, including:  

  • Working collaboratively with the Commissioning Lead for these services, providing public health support and guidance in service development and redesign, including performance reporting, monitoring, and reviewing pathways. 

  • Working closely with the Public Health Principal for Children & Young People in Central Bedfordshire to support the continued development of effective partnership working with Children’s Services, and the Integrated Care Board (BLMK), to deliver positive outcomes for children’s health and wellbeing. 

  • Providing public health support and expertise, through robust matrix working across all 3 local authorities, to all members of the Children & Young People’s Public Health Team. 

  • Line management of staff in public health as required. 

 

Key responsibilities of the role include: 

  • Strong system leadership and partnership working, including influencing other organisations and agencies to increase their engagement with the public health priority to improve the health and wellbeing of all children and young people, with a key focus on reducing inequalities, prevention, and early intervention. 

  • Working knowledge and experience of key public health concepts such as epidemiology, data interpretation, evaluation, and delivering and monitoring cost-effective, and evidence-based interventions.  

  • The ability to provide public health support for the effective commissioning of a range of services, including needs assessments, specifying service outcomes, and performance management. 

 

Qualifications and Experience   

To meet the requirements of the role, the suitable candidate will have: 

  • Degree level, or equivalent level of knowledge gained through courses and relevant experience. 

  • Experience of working with a range of external organisations to achieve specific objectives. 

  • Experience of multi-agency working across organisational boundaries. 

  • Experience of commissioning and performance management. 

  • Experience of influencing and achieving without direct management. 

  • Experience of working effectively both within a team, and independently. 

  • Experience of project management. 

  • Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines – managing own workload and delegating as appropriate. 

  • Experience of line management. 

  • Sound understanding of the requirements of working in a local authority. 

  • A good knowledge and understanding of other groups/service areas of the Council, the NHS, and statutory and voluntary sectors. 

  • Experience of working effectively within a team. 

  • The ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines. 

  • The ability to be flexible and adaptable, plan effectively, and respond to changing circumstances.
