More about the role:
Central Bedfordshire Council is a large unitary authority that strives to put its customers first and achieve its ambition to be a more efficient and responsive Council. We are developing a 24/7 online offering to give the people in our community even greater accessibility and are constantly looking at other ways to improve and communicate with our residents.
Our Revenues and Benefits Service is critical to our future success as it facilitates the billing and collection of Council Tax and Business Rates as well as the assessment of benefit claims, ensuring we achieve positive outcomes in a sensitive way.
Help us change for the better.
As a Revenues Officer, your role will be the collection and enforcement of our historic council tax debt. This will involve investigative work using a variety of sources to establish payment solutions and to trace the whereabouts of debtors who have often absconded leaving no forwarding address. You will be required to contact debtors by email, phone and letter, and it follows that good communication skills, both written and verbal, are absolutely essential.
To be suitable for the role you should be able to demonstrate good customer care, good listening, and negotiation skills, as you will be expected to identify and offer solutions to customers to pay council tax arrears, and to achieve good outcomes.
Attention to detail is essential to succeed, as you will be assessing and preparing cases for enforcement action. You will also be responsible for updating and maintaining the council’s confidential database of individual records, a DBS check must be undertaken to allow access to some of the systems you would be accessing.
We work in a fast-paced environment so you will need to demonstrate that you can work on your own initiative, as once your training is completed, you will be expected to make independent decisions, within guidelines, and to be able to prioritise your own workload.
We are looking for a good team player who works well with colleagues, to share ideas and good practice to help us achieve excellent results.
On a practical level, you will have a good standard of English and Maths, (minimum of A to C grade GCSE’s or equivalent) as well as extensive experience of using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams in order to perform your duties. Previous experience of working in a similar debt collection environment is preferred.
